Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi

Matteo Winkler's fields of interest concern international law and particularly international trade law. In order to deepen these fields, he started researching on electronic commerce law, publishing some articles about conflict of laws in websites' terms of services, jurisdiction - especially about the Yahoo! case - and applicable law in e-commerce transactions.

After September 11, 2001, he shifted on another field, that is the fight against international terrorism. Writing a paper for the Ph.D. Program in the Bocconi University of Milan, he faced the problems of applying international regulations against the financing of terrorism, both in the United States, and in international organizations, as the United Nations or European Union. On these issues, every year he teaches a seminar in the Catholic University of Milan about international law norms concerning terrorism and terrorist organizations.

As to the argument of his Ph.D. Thesis, he is researching on the regulatory competition between States in a globalized world, trying to individuate norms concerning the accountability of multinational enterprises and to understand how regulatory competition, and the differences between laws of single States, affects the behaviour of multinationals on liability or accountability issues. During a Ph.D. period of studies abroad, as a visiting scholar at the Yale Law School, he deepened the Yukos case, focusing on the proceedings before the Houston Bankrupcty Court in the same moment the proceedings started and terminated.

Out of his academic works, he works as a lawyer in a prestigious law firm in Milan, Italy.
