Profile

Prof. Dr. Richard Kreindler is a Partner of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and has specialized in international arbitration and litigation matters since 1985. He is a member of the New York and Paris Bars. He has handled numerous commercial, construction, infrastructure and investment arbitrations throughout the world under the rules of the leading arbitration regimes and institutions as counsel, party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator and chairman.

Among his arbitration-related treatises are Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit-Kompendium für die Praxis [Arbitration - A Practitioner's Compendium](Verlag Recht und Wirtschaft) with J. Schaefer and Dr. R. Wolff, Evaluation of Damages in International Arbitration, Dossiers IV, ICC Institute of World Business Law with Y. Derains, Strafrechtsrelevante und andere anstoessige Vertraege als Gegenstand von Schiedsverfahren: Zum Vorgehen von Schiedsgerichten bei Rechtsverletzungen von Vertragsparteien (Verlag Recht und Wirtschaft), Transnational Litigation: A Practitioner's Guide, 3 Vols.(Oceana/Oxford), and Transnational Litigation: A Basic Primer (Oceana/Oxford). He has also authored ca. 400 other publications and presentations on international dispute resolution topics. He has served in an editorial or advisory capacity for Arab Law Quarterly, Arbitration & Dispute Resolution Law Journal, Arbitration International,International Arbitration Law Review, International Journal of Dispute Resolution, International Legal Materials, Revue de Droit des Affaires Internationales, World Arbitration and Mediation Report, the Council of the ICC Institute of World Business Law and the American Law Institute, among others.

He is a graduate of Harvard, Munich, Columbia and Münster Universities. He is a Fellow and Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London. He was Chairman of the IBA working group charged with the review of the 1999 IBA Rules on the Taking of Evidence in International Commercial Arbitration, resulting in the enactment of the revised IBA Rules as of May 2010. He is also an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Münster, Germany, where he has taught for over a decade. He was Lecturer in the Private International Law course at the Hague Academy of International Law in 2012 and his lectures are to be published in the Recueil des cours in 2013.
