Profile

Rudolf Hennecke studied law at the Universities of Muenster, Liverpool (UK), and Cologne. He passed the first State Exam in 1999, after which he worked as a research assistant at the Law Centre for European and International Cooperation (R.I.Z.) in Cologne. He passed the second State Exam (qualification to hold the office of a judge in the German state courts) in 2005.

During his legal traineeship, he worked, inter alia, for the American Arbitration Association in New York.

In 2006, he joined the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was a member of the firm's dispute resolution practice group. He left Freshfields in 2014 to co-found the dispute resolution boutique Borris Hennecke Kneisel together with Christian Borris and Sebastian Kneisel.

Rudolf's practice focuses on international and domestic arbitration and litigation. His recent activity as counsel includes:

  • One of the first emergency arbitrations under the 2010 SIAC arbitration rules, as well as the ensuing main proceedings, in a dispute arising from a joint venture agreement,
  • Arbitrations concerning long-term supply agreements for gas (ICC, DIS, UNCITRAL and other ad-hoc),
  • Post-M&A arbitrations (mostly DIS and ICC), as well as post-M&A expert determination proceedings (Schiedsgutachtenver- fahren)
  • Investment arbitrations under the ICSID Rules, as well as under the UNCITRAL Rules,
  • Litigation before German state courts arising from international sales transactions (governed by the CISG),
  • Out-of-court settlement of an international construction case,
  • Out-of-court settlement of a dispute arising from an international IT-outsourcing contract.

He has also been appointed as arbitrator in disputes concerning issues of corporate law, agency and international sales transactions (ICC and DIS, as well as ad-hoc proceedings).

Rudolf is a member of the German bar, the German Arbitration Institution (Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit, DIS) and the German Lawyers' Association (Deutscher Anwalt Verein, DAV). He publishes frequently on issues of arbitration, international sales law, and investment protection. He is a co-author of the Commentary on the New York Convention (Wolff, ed.), as well as a contributor to the Handbook on International Investment Law (Bungenberg, Griebel, Hobe, Reinisch, eds., forthcoming).

Rudolf speaks German and English. He was born in 1971 and is a German citizen.
