Professor Dr. iur. Karsten Nowrot, LL.M. (Indiana) is Professor of Public Law, Public International Law, European Law and International Economic Law as well as the current Head of the Department of Law at the School of Socio-Economics of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg, Germany. He is also an affiliated professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg and serves as Deputy Director of the Master Programme "European and European Legal Studies" at the Institute for European Integration of the Europa-Kolleg in Hamburg. Furthermore, he was, among others, a visiting professor and Global Challenge Visiting Scholar 2015 at Seoul National University School of Law during the summer of 2015 and a visiting professor at Kobe University Graduate School of Law in the fall of 2019 as well as at the University of New York Tirana in the fall of 2023 and the spring of 2024.
His primary research interests lay in the areas of international economic law, public international law and European Union law. Karsten Nowrot is a frequent author on topics in these as well as other fields of law and received the Commerzbank Research Award in recognition of his project "The International Legal Status of Transnational Corporations in the World Economic System". He has taught courses on issues of international, European and German law at universities in Albania, China, Germany, Japan, the Russian Federation, Ukraine as well as at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Jordan. In addition, he has received invitations to give presentations at conferences in numerous countries and other territories, among them Australia, China, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Taiwan and the United States.
Karsten Nowrot received his legal education at the Universities of Kiel/Germany, Surrey/UK, Halle-Wittenberg/Germany and Indiana University School of Law/USA. He holds two German law degrees with distinction from 1997/2001 and was awarded the degree of Master of Laws in 1998 as well as his Ph.D. (Dr. iur.) in 2005, both with distinction. In 2012 he completed his habilitation (post-doctoral degree) in law at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. Prior to his appointment as professor at the University of Hamburg, Karsten Nowrot worked as a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Law at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and served as a post-graduate judicial service trainee, inter alia, at the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany and the economic department of the German Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
