Profile

Phillip Landolt specializes in counsel and co-counsel work in international arbitration. He also accepts appointments as an arbitrator.

Of Swiss parentage, Phillip was born in the US, and raised in Canada. He qualified and practiced as an Ontario lawyer before moving to Cambridge, England, Ferrara, Italy, and Freiburg i. B, Germany to conduct research and write a doctoral thesis on civil law obligation.

His subsequent legal practice of over ten years in international arbitration, mostly in Geneva, but also in London, and for three years in EU competition law in Brussels builds on his combined common law and civil law foundation. He is qualified as an avocat (Geneva), a solicitor (England & Wales) and a barrister & solicitor (Ontario).

Phillip trained in common law chambers at the English bar to obtain daily court room experience in the skills of oral advocacy. In his years at a Magic Circle English law firm, Phillip acquired the practical skills of managing large international cases. Additionally, his seven years at leading Swiss international arbitration firms fully acquainted him with the techniques and view points of Swiss arbitration practice, and the Swiss international arbitration community.

In his counsel and co-counsel work, Phillip draws from his comparative contract law background, his extensive experience in arbitration advocacy, his efficient case management skills, and his Swiss and Anglo-American cross-cultural perspective.

Phillip has developed expert knowledge about the markets in which he has worked, notably telecoms, oil & gas, and pharmaceuticals markets. He is quick to acquire knowledge of the essential operation of other markets which arise in his casework.

Of English mother tongue, he is fluent in Switzerlands official languages, French, German and Italian, and has working knowledge of Spanish and Dutch.

Phillip is a frequent speaker at international arbitration law conferences in Europe, North America, and Asia. He is a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva.

Phillip is listed in the Swiss international arbitration section of European Legal Experts. The Legal 500 rates him as "excellent".
