Florence Karimi Shako
Profile
Florence Shako is a legal academic, advocate and consultant who undertakes research in access to justice and business and human rights issues. She graduated with a Master of Laws degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She also received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi, Kenya where she graduated at the top of her class. Florence is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and the Senior Partner at Mitullah, Shako and Associates Advocates, a boutique law firm in Nairobi, Kenya that embraces social justice values.
Florence is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and a Certified Professional Mediator (CPM). As a practicing arbitrator and mediator, she has handled several matters successfully. Florence has extensive experience in facilitating Alternative Dispute Resolution trainings having trained for several years with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as well as the Strathmore Dispute Resolution Center. Most recently, she is the current Vice Chairperson of Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution (WADR), a professional association of women in the field of alternative dispute resolution. She is also the Kluwer Arbitration Blog Representative for the London Court of International Arbitration.
Florence has also taken up the position of Executive Director at the Center for Education Policy and Climate Justice (CEPCJ) with the goal of developing and executing research, policy reform and strategic litigation in its focus areas of education policy and climate justice. This is in line with her aims to advocate for access to justice and business and human rights issues in various contexts.
Florence holds several professional qualifications notably, a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Florence has taught Alternative Dispute Resolution in law schools for over a decade having previously been a lecturer at Riara Law School, Riara University as well as a pioneer lecturer at Strathmore Law School, Strathmore University.
