CARLOS JOSÉ VALDERRAMA is an independent counsel and consultant on prevention and resolution of international disputes, particularly focused on investor-state disputes. He also acts as arbitrator in international commercial disputes in various fora.
Prior to stablishing his independent practice, Carlos José worked as counsel for the International Arbitration practices of Sidley Austin LLP and White & Case LLP.
From 2010 to 2015, he led, the Republic of Peru's inter-agency commission representing the state before investor-state claims, successfully conducting Peru's defense of US $50 billion in claims, all of which resulted in favorable outcomes for the State. Also, in that role, he managed complex negotiations preventing a number of potential international investment disputes, advised different state agencies on treaty and contract provision drafting, and assisted them in evaluating risks and avoiding disputes.
He provides legal consultancy to a high-profile air-force contractor company on its relations with governments, partners, clients, and suppliers, on contracts, public procurement policies, proprietary information protection, ITAR, EAR and anti-corruption compliance policies, among other matters.
Carlos José also acts as a consultant for the World Bank (WBG) and the IDB (Interamerican Development Bank) focused on rule of law, justice policy issues state. He also practiced as an attorney at Navarro Abogados for 10 years, in Lima, Peru.
