David J. A. Cairns is a partner of B. CREMADES Y ASOCIADOS, specialising in international commercial and investment dispute resolution.
His practice covers all types of contractual disputes, including international sale of goods, licensing and distribution, intellectual property, joint ventures, corporate acquisitions, construction and infrastructure projects, and sports disputes, as well as investment disputes under BIT agreements. His work in the investment context includes disputes with local joint venture parties, regulatory expropriation, fair and equitable treatment, issues of corruption and illegality under domestic law, and the relationship between contractual and treaty rights.
David J. A. Cairns regularly acts as an international arbitrator.
He has received more than 20 international appointments under a wide range of institutional rules. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a regular commentator on developments in Spanish and international arbitration. He was an adjunct professor at the University Carlos III of Madrid from 2004 to 2011, where he taught international arbitration practice.
David JA Cairns is an accredited UK mediator, and a member of the Panel of Conciliators of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). He also has considerable experience as an advocate both before international arbitration tribunals and before domestic courts in New Zealand.
