Intellectual Property Rights in International Investment Agreements: An Overview

Introduction
This survey reviews IPR protection standards in the context of WTO and IP chapters of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs).[1] It then examines the extent to which BITs and investment chapters of RTAs provide for IPR protection above the standards embodied in the WTO-TRIPS Agreement. Finally, it reviews the role that the investor-state dispute settlement mechanisms have played so far in addressing IPR-related disputes.
