Abstract
For the past four decades, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has played a central, two-fold role in the resolution of disputes concerning cultural property allegedly stolen or illegally removed from its country of origin. First, UNESCO's standard-setting activity in the fight against the illicit traffic of cultural goods has contributed to the harmonisation of the legal framework for disputes on the recovery of cultural property.
