On 17 December 2014, President Obama announced an agreement with Cuba to re-launch formal diplomatic relations. Seven months later, Washington and Havana formally restored diplomatic relations, officially putting an end to fifty years of severed ties. Then on 8 December 2015, U.S. and Cuban officials sat down for the first time to outline the respective multi-billion dollar claims each nation has against the other.
