Introduction

On December 13, 2005, Malaysia and Japan signed a free trade agreement on the margins of the ASEAN +4 conference in Kuala Lumpur. Currently, bilateral trade between the two countries is about $30 billion, with Japan being Malaysia's third largest market after the US and Singapore. This is the third free trade agreement ("FTA") for Japan, joining FTAs with Singapore and Mexico.
