Dundee Professor Wälde joins Essex Court Chambers

27 October 2004

NEWS RELEASE
21 October 2004

Thomas W. Wälde, Professor of International Economic, Natural Resources and Energy Law & Jean-Monnet Chair of EU Energy Law at the University of Dundee has become a tenant practising at Essex Court Chambers.

Thomas Wälde is a specialist in transnational mediation, international investment arbitration and international oil, gas, energy, mining and infrastructure investment. As the principal UN Interregional Adviser on Investment, Mineral and Petroleum Law (up to 1991), he was responsible for legislative reform, government-investor negotiations and dispute resolution for large-scale and complex oil, gas, energy and mining investment ventures.

During his term as Executive Director, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee, this research unit developed into the leading international graduate school in natural resources, energy and international business transactions, winning the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2004.

Following the end of his term as CEPMLP director in 2002,Thomas Wälde established an international legal advisory practice and mediation service with clients, which include the largest East European and Scandinavian electricity companies, South African mining companies, major oil companies and the leading international law firms in the field of investment arbitration, oil, gas and energy. He acts both for investors and for governments in oil, gas, energy, infrastructure and investment disputes.

Professor Wälde's practice will complement those of other members of the high ranked barristers chambers both in terms of the sector-specific expertise and the personal reputations of Essex Court Chambers' independent arbitrators worldwide.

Recent cases for Wälde include acting as mediator in the 1 B $ dispute between Vattenfall and PS relating to the world's largest submarine electricity interconnector and as principal expert in the successful prosecution of the first Energy Charter Treaty-based award (Nykomb v Latvia).

Thomas Wälde has also established OGEL, the global energy law portal, and the new TDM - transnational dispute-management internet-based intelligence and information service. He set up and moderates two influential internet-based global professional networks - ENATRES (energy-resources) and OGEMID (oil-gas-energy-mining-infrastructure and investment dispute management). He is fluent in English, German, French & Spanish, with limited Russian & Arabic.

Editors Notes:

Essex Court Chambers is a leading commercial set of chambers. Its individual practitioners act for a wide range of commercial and individual clients worldwide, including major City, national and international institutions, private companies and individuals. The work of Chambers comes from domestic and overseas law firms and from in-house legal teams, accountancy practices and other professional firms. Members of chambers advise and act in a broad range of litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution worldwide.

Chambers is not a 'firm' or a 'partnership' but a collection of individuals who have developed personal professional reputations in specialist legal fields.
