Call for entries to Steve Weston Prize - Deadline: 30 September 2009

8 July 2009

CEPMLP is calling for entries to the Steve Weston Prize, an annual essay competition on oil and gas law administered by Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust

Open to all, the Steve Weston Prize is awarded to the author or authors of an outstanding essay on a preselected topic. Worth up to £1000, the Prize is funded by BP, Shell, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.

The topic for 2009 is

"Does the current legal regime governing the Arctic provide an adequate basis for investment by oil and gas companies or an appropriate framework for oil and gas exploration in this sensitive region?"

All entries should be 3000 words in length and submitted electronically to cepmlp-trust@dundee.ac.uk no later than 30 September 2009.

The competition honours the memory of Steve Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in the developing regions.

Background

In memory of Steven Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in developing regions, during his thirty year career with BP and then with Herbert Smith, the Trustees of the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust, announced in 2007 an annual essay prize to be funded by BP, Shell UK, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.

The Prize, to the value of £1000, is to be awarded each year to the author or authors of an essay of outstanding merit submitted on a preselected subject by a panel of representatives of the five funding businesses in conjunction with Steve's wife Anne and his three daughters. The Prize will be announced in December of the year by the Trustees on the recommendation of the same Panel.

In making its recommendation the Panel and the Trust will have particular regard to Steve's interest in oil and gas law in developing regions, and the need to develop the indigenous legal profession in those areas. If in any year no essay of sufficient merit is submitted, the Trustees may withhold the Prize and accumulate the monies for future years.

Eligibility

Essays maybe submitted by anyone, regardless of nationality or place of residence.
