Jan Paulsson appointed Ibrahim Shihata Chair on International Investment Law

28 June 2006

Leading authority on international economic and investment law, Jan Paulsson, has joined the Centre of Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee as Professor of International Investment Law. His chair is named after the late Prof Ibrahim Shihata, the World Bank's long-serving General Counsel and CEPMLP's Professor of International Economic Law.

As a member of the Centre's global faculty, Prof Paulsson will co-supervise the doctoral programme and lecture in the graduate studies programme for international investment and dispute resolution for CEPMLP's Master of Law (LL.M) degrees in International Business Transactions, and International Dispute Resolution and Management.

Prof Paulsson is based in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Paris office and is the head of the firm's worldwide arbitration and public international law groups. He has acted as counsel or arbitrator in innumerable international disputes. He is President of both the World Bank Administrative Tribunal and the London Court of International Arbitration. He is co-author of the leading commentary International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration (3rd edition, 2000), as well as The Freshfields Guide to ICSID Arbitration (2004). His latest book is Denial of Justice in International Law (CUP, 2005).

His appointment follows the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' recognition earlier this year of the Centre's LL.M programme in International Dispute Resolution and Management as a qualification for membership. The LL.M. deals with international dispute resolution, including settlement negotiation and management techniques and the formal resolution or settlement of disputes through arbitration, mediation, expert determination, and other processes, with a particular focus on the energy and natural resources industries.

About the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy at the University of Dundee

CEPMLP is the internationally renowned postgraduate centre for teaching and research on law and policy studies in the fields of energy, natural resources and international business transactions. The Centre, a department of the University of Dundee (Scotland), offers LL.Ms, MBAs, MScs, PhDs and Postgraduate Diplomas on a full-time or distance learning basis. The Centre also offers professional training, consultancy and research services alongside a lively seminar programme in summer.
