Call for entries to Steve Weston prize 2011 - deadline 30 September 2011
16 June 2011
CEPMLP is calling for entries to the Steve Weston Prize, an annual essay competition on oil and gas law administered by The Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust.
The competition honours the memory of Steve Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in the developing regions.
Open to all, the Steve Weston Prize is awarded to the author or authors of an outstanding essay on a preselected topic. Worth up to £1000, the Prize is funded by BP, Shell, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.
The topic for 2011 is "In its award in proceedings between Suez (and others) v Argentine Republic (Case No ARB/03/19 dated 30th July 2010) the ICSID Tribunal stated: "Argentina is subject to both international obligations i.e.human rights and treaty obligation [sic], and must respect both of them equally. Under the circumstances of these cases, Argentina's human rights obligations and its investment treaty obligations are not inconsistent, contradictory, or mutually exclusive".
Consider how human rights and treaty obligations may be balanced through the application of the principle of proportionality, particularly in the context of settlement of disputes relating to concession contracts for oil and gas exploration.
All entries should be 3000 words in length and submitted electronically to cepmlp-trust@dundee.ac.uk no later than 30 September 2011.

Background
In memory of Steven Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in developing regions, during his thirty year career with BP and then with Herbert Smith, the Trustees of The Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust, announced in 2007 an annual essay prize to be funded by BP, Shell UK, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.
The Prize, to the value of £1000, is to be awarded each year to the author or authors of an essay of outstanding merit submitted on a preselected subject by a panel of representatives of the five funding businesses in conjunction with Steve's wife Anne and his three daughters.
In making its recommendation the Panel and the Trust will have particular regard to Steve's interest in oil and gas law in developing regions, and the need to develop the indigenous legal profession in those areas. If in any year no essay of sufficient merit is submitted, the Trustees may withhold the Prize and accumulate the monies for future years.
