Dr. A F M Maniruzzaman is Professor of International and Business Law (April 2004 -); Director of Legal Research and Director of Postgraduate Research Degrees in Law, Department of Accounting & Law, Portsmouth Business School, University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom. He is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow (Spring term 2006), Department of Law, Queen Mary, University of London, and an Honorary Fellow (Nov 2005 - ), Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee, Scotland, Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario, Canada (winter 2008). He previously taught at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh (1983-1993) and the University of Kent, United Kingdom where he was Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Law (1993-2004).

He received his LLB (Honours) (First Class First) and LLM (First Class First) from the University of Dhaka, M.Int'l.Law (Distinction) from the Australian National University, Australia., PhD in International Law from the University of Cambridge and certificates in both Public and Private International Law from The Hague Academy of International Law, The Netherlands. He also did his postdoctoral research at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford holding various research positions.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), London (http://www.rsa.org.uk), a Fellow of the Society for Advanced legal Studies (FSALS), London (http://ials.sas.ac.uk/SALS/society.htm), a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), London (http://www.rgs.org/), and also a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, Cambridge.

He is a member of the National Conference of University Professors, UK and a Council Member of the Society of Legal Scholars, UK. He is also a member of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, USA, and American Business Law Association. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge (1998), a Visiting Scholar at St. John's College, University of Oxford (1999) and at the Centre of International Studies (1992-3), Cambridge, and also a Senior Visiting Fellow, University of Kent Law School (2004). He has also been a Research Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies and Research of the Hague Academy of International Law (1987), a Fellow of the United Nations International Law Commission (International Law Seminar) (1989), Geneva, and a Fellow of Cambridge Philosophical Society.

He was the Prizeman of the University of Dhaka for his best performances both in LLB (Hons.) and LLM programmes, Australian National University Graduate Scholar, Cambridge Commonwealth Scholar, UK FCO/SAS Scholar, Charles Wallace Trust Scholar and The Hague Academy of International Law Summer Programme Scholar. He was also a grant-recipient of Cambridge University's Humanitarian Trust Studentship in International Law.

He is a member of Bangladesh Bar (since 1981) and a member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association, Dhaka (since 1985) and has practised as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (since 1983). He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, the Southern branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the International Law Association (Bangladesh & British branches), the International Committee on International Commercial Arbitration of the International Law Association (ILA), London (http://www.ila-hq.org/), LAWASIA Energy Law Section. He is also a member of the Swiss Arbitration Association, Basel, Switzerland, the International Chamber of Commerce Institute of World Business Law, Paris, European Centre of Arbitration / European Court of Arbitration, Strasbourg, a Professional Member of the Association for International Arbitration, Paris, Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), Houston, Texas, USA (http://www.aipn.org/), and International Arbitration Institute, Paris, and a member of the Specialist Group 'Energy Law and Climate' of the Commission on Environmental Law of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), (http://www.iucn.org/). He was a member of the Institute of Petroleum, London for several years.

He acted as an Honorary Special Legal Adviser (on international legal matters) to the Hon'ble President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh (1996-2001). Although offered to join as a Legal Adviser to the Government of the State of Bahrain (1993), he had to decline for professional commitments elsewhere. He has worked as an international arbitration law expert / consultant in some high-profile ICSID and ICC cases and also as an International Legal Consultant to governments, state-owned enterprises, multinational corporations and multinational law firms. His consultancy work includes drafting and negotiation of dispute settlement clauses, including arbitration clauses, clauses concerning valuation of petroleum, various aspects of production sharing contracts, interpretation of various contractual clauses of various international economic development contracts / State contracts, international commercial contracts, interpretation and application of bilateral investment protection treaties, advice on public policy issues and international arbitration, ICSID and ICC provisions, and matters of dispute settlement procedures, and in the wider area of international foreign investment law and international business transactions.

He is also an expert in South Asian Law (esp. the Laws of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan). He is the Chief Editor of the special issue of OGEL on Asian Energy Law and Policy and of the TDM special edition on Dispute Settlement in Asia.

He has lived, received education and worked in both oriental and occidental societies, institutions and cultures.

His current teaching and research interests lie in the fields of International Business Law, International Commercial Arbitration and Litigation, Public International Law, International Economic Law, International Investment Law, and Globalization and International Development Law. In his research his approach often has a unique and fine blend of Public international law, Private International Law and Transnational Commercial Law analyses in the context of international business transaction issues. He has taught for many years undergraduate and postgraduate specialist courses in British Universities and abroad and also supervised LLM. MPhil and PhD research in those areas of interest.

He has published extensively in various specialist areas of International Law and International Business Law. His articles and writings have appeared in the leading international law journals such as European Journal of International Law, British Yearbook of International Law, Asian Yearbook of International Law, International and Comparative Law Quarterly, American University International Law Review, American Review of International Arbitration, Wisconsin International Law Journal, Netherlands International Law Review, Journal of International Arbitration, Arbitration International, International Arbitration Law Review, International Energy Law and Taxation Review, Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law, Oil and Gas Intelligence, and Journal of World Investment, International Company and Commercial Law Review, etc. He is now completing several books for publication in the near future.
