John P. Gaffney

John Gaffney is an international arbitration lawyer, based in Abu Dhabi. An Irish national, John is admitted as a Solicitor in England & Wales and the Republic of Ireland. John has substantial experience in disputes involving construction, energy, investment, and telecommunications matters. He has also developed a particular expertise in the area of investment treaty arbitration, having acted for various governments in the defense of investment treaty claims.
John has worked with the international arbitration practices of King & Spalding and Freshfields in Paris, and Skadden, Arps in London, as well as serving as a legal officer with the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva. He also has practiced with some of the leading commercial law firms in Ireland.
In addition to his work as Senior Counsel, John is a member of a number of international and domestic arbitration panels and sits as an arbitrator in WIPO domain name disputes and DIAC proceedings and as an Expert in ICC Expertise proceedings.
John is the Case Notes editor of the European International Arbitration Review, an Associate Editor of Transnational Dispute Management, an Associate Editor and Contributor of Investment Claims, and Rapporteur for the OGEMID listserv. He has published and spoken widely on international dispute resolution.
John is listed in the Who's Who of International Commercial Arbitration and Construction (2010, 2011, 2016), and the Euromoney Guide to Leading Commercial Arbitration Experts (9th and 10th eds.).
