Dr Veijo Heiskanen is a leading independent arbitrator and distinguished figure in the field of international arbitration, boasting an impressive career spanning over three decades. His expertise encompasses both commercial and investment arbitration, making him a sought-after arbitrator on the global stage. Prior to embarking on his career as an independent arbitrator, Veijo was a Partner at a leading international law firm.
Dr Heiskanen served as Secretary General and Senior Claims Judge of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland (2000-02), Deputy Chief of the Legal Service of the United Nations Compensation Commission (1994-98) and Legal Adviser of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal (1990-94).
Dr Heiskanen is member of the panels of arbitrators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution.
Dr Heiskanen has published extensively on international law and international arbitration and has taught at The Hague Academy of International Law (2002).
Dr Heiskanen holds LL.M. and S.J.D. degrees from Harvard Law School and LL.B. and LL.Lic. degrees from the University of Helsinki. He speaks English, Finnish and French and has working knowledge of German and Swedish.
