Young OGEMID Symposium on PhDs: A Cross-Jurisdictional Conversation (April 2025)

Pursuing a PhD in law can be both a rewarding and daunting academic journey. From selecting a topic that contributes meaningfully to the field, finding the right supervisor, to balancing research with personal well-being, the process is filled with challenges that are rarely addressed in formal training.

This Young-OGEMID virtual symposium will take a practical and realistic look at the law PhD journey from start to finish. Drawing on the insights of experienced academics, the symposium will explore key topics such as identifying viable and impactful research questions, navigating the supervisor-student relationship, staying on track, finishing on time, and preparing a strong application.

Whether you're considering a PhD or are already in the early stages of one, this session offers essential guidance to help you make the most of your doctoral experience.

Topics:

  1. How to identify a viable research topic that contributes meaningfully to the field
  2. How to approach potential supervisors and what they typically expect from doctoral applicants
  3. How to finish your PhD on time (and maintain your mental and physical health!)
  4. How to prepare for a PhD (i.e., any resources or preliminary reading suitable for a prospective candidate)
